Obituary for Marian Irene Phillips (Phillips)

Marian Irene Phillips (Phillips)
Marian Irene Phillips, 87, of Winchester, VA went home to be with her Lord on September 7, 2016 after a lengthy illness at her residence. Born on October 13, 1928 in Philadelphia, PA to Oakley Willard and Margaret Whittaker Phillips, Marian was the second youngest of seven children.

Marian primarily took care of her family, but also worked as a secretary and eventually became the human resources director for Balis & Company of Philadelphia, underwriters for Lloyd’s of London. She was well known for her sacrifice and generosity with her financial and physical resources to those less fortunate, especially her family, but also friends and strangers. She was an avid reader, loved animals (especially cats), possessed a wonderful sense of humor and thoroughly enjoyed her role as mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Her pot roast, mashed potatoes and cole slaw supper was her signature dish relished by all. Proud to be a Philadelphian from the “Greatest Generation”, Marian told countless stories of growing up during the Depression with strong family values, work ethics and creative ways to handle financial struggles.

Marian was preceded in death by her parents and six siblings. She is survived by two daughters, Karen Cribbs(Jack) and Karla Marsey both of Winchester; five grandchildren, Joshua Cribbs(Becky) of Raleigh, NC, Bethany Deitz(Scott) of Stephens City, VA, John Cribbs, IV of Winchester, David Beers(Alodiah) of Hayward, CA and Marisa LaBonte-Beers(Mike) of Wakefield, RI and seven great grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 24, 2016 at Fellowship Bible Church with Dr. Don Den Hartog officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. A private inurnment will be held at a later date in Mt. Hebron Cemetery.

The family wishes to thank the Valley Home Health nurses as well as the amazing staff of Blue Ridge Hospice for the way they blessed Marian’s last days with comfort and concern.
