Arthur Neill Jolliffe, 84, lifelong resident of Winchester-Frederick County died at Winchester Medical Center February 1st, 2016. Arthur was born in Winchester September 23rd, 1931, the youngest son of Laurence Van Horne Jolliffe and Ethel Baldwin Jolliffe.

Arthur graduated from Handley High School in 1951 and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy for four years. He served aboard the destroyer USS Bole in 1952 and was a proud member of the Korean War Veterans Association.

He married Margel McKee of Winchester in 1967.

Arthur was best known for his work at Johnston’s Jewelry Store as a watchmaker and jeweler. He started in 1962 working for Samuel Johnston, later became Johnston’s partner, and retired in 1998 as owner of the business. He was a past member of the Gemologist Institute of America.

Upon retirement, Arthur began volunteering at Winchester Medical Center, which he enjoyed for eighteen years. He was honored as an outstanding volunteer by Winchester Medical Center. He was active with the local chapter of the American Cancer Society. He was active with the Winchester-Frederick County Historical Society and received the Nancy Beatty Melton Distinguished Service Award in 2000 and the Stewart Bell Jr. Award in 2006 for chairing the publication of More Images of the Past. He enjoyed multiple appearances on Cable Talk with Barry Lee sharing local photographs.

Arthur was a lifelong fireman and served as secretary of Gainesboro Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company and as president of the Frederick County Firemen’s Association. He was a life member of the Charley Rouss Fire Company as well as a life member of the Cumberland Valley Firemen’s Association.

He was the Junior Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year in 1965. He was a past president of the Gainesboro Ruritan Club, past member of the Round Hill Ruritan Club, and zone governor of Ruritan National. He was a member of Braddock Street United Methodist Church in Winchester.

He is survived by his wife, Margel, daughter, Jenny Jolliffe Powers, son-in-law, Dr. David Powers, grandson, Arthur Nicholas “Nick” Powers, all of Winchester, sister, Charlotte Jolliffe Fetterman of Wilmington, North Carolina, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers Charles Jolliffe and Joseph Jolliffe.

A gathering of family and friends will be on Thursday evening, February 4, 2016 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, February 5, 2016 at Jones Funeral Home with Rev. Raleigh Watson officiating. Burial in Mt. Hebron will be private.
