Obituary for Alfred D "Bud" Robertson
Alfred Dawson "Bud" Robertson, a Winchester architectural draftsman who designed many homes and businesses in the area, died at Blue Ridge Hospice on February 14. He was 87. The cause was from complications from COPD including emphysema.
Bud grew up in Winchester and attended Handley High School. He was in the Virginia National Guard before joining the army and serving a year of combat in Korea. He was stationed in Japan when the Korean War began and soon after moved into Busan with the 79th Tank Battalion. After his service, he graduated from the National Drafting School in Washington, D.C.
He was a devoted member of the Hayfield Assembly of God and was involved in other local organizations through the years including the Boy Scouts of America, Izaak Walton League, the American Institute for Design and Drafting, and the Winchester/Frederick County Conservation Club.
Bud had a fulfilling career as an architectural draftsman in Washington, DC and Winchester before starting his own consulting and designing firm, A.D. Robertson Design Concepts; he contributed to his field by sharing his expertise as a drafting instructor at Dowell J. Howard.
Bud loved the outdoors and was an enthusiast of hunting and fishing, proficient with both rifle and bow. He also enjoyed painting and playing the guitar in church. As a young man, he was involved in the local music scene, playing acoustic guitar and bass, and was a member of a The Uplanders band.
Alfred Dawson Robertson was born in Winchester, Virginia on November 7, 1931. His late parents were James Edward Robertson and Katherine Snider Robertson. His grandfather was a local merchant who ran the general and retail coal store, W.B. Snider & Sons, on the corner of North Cameron and Baker Street.
He is survived by his three children with Sarah Loy: James Barton Robertson (Kendra Tolley) of Winchester, Lori Ann Robertson (Chris Crawford) of Shepherdstown, WV, and Amy Dawson Robertson (Alexandra Ogilvie) of Washington, DC; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; Annita Wilson, companion; and three half-siblings, Joanne Robertson Daly, Henry M.N. Robertson, and Bruce A. Robertson.
He was preceded in death by his second wife, Barbara Robertson, and his half-brothers, David Nicholls Robertson, Charles A. Robertson, and James Duncan Robertson.
A memorial service will be held at 12:00 noon on Thursday, April 18 at Hayfield Assembly of God.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice.
