Obituary for Jutta Maria von Payr

Jutta Maria von Payr passed away September 22, 2018 in Winchester, Virginia. Jutta was born in Braunschweig, Germany on November 30, 1923, the daughter of Carl von Cleve and Edith Gudewill.

She lived with her parents on their estate in Eastern Germany until the advent of World War II turned her life upside down and she was drafted as a Red Cross nurse. Towards the end of 1945 the advancing Russian army forced her to flee to Southern Germany along with all of the wounded soldiers that were able to walk. Fortunately, her entire family made it to safety. In 1950 she met her husband, Hans, also a refugee. He was able to immigrate to the United States and finally after 2 years she was able to join him. They were married in Greenville, TN. She is survived by a daughter, Barbara (Matthew) and a son, Peter (Anne), 4 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

She was a gentle, elegant, generous and loving woman. She loved playing bridge, painting china and gardening.

A Memorial Service is planned at Westminster Canterbury on Thursday, September 27, 2018 at 3:00pm with a reception to follow.
