Obituary for William Jennings "Bill" King Jr.

William Jennings King, Jr. (Bill), 70, passed away on August 27, 2018, at the Willows of Meadow Branch, Winchester, Virginia. Bill was born on July 31, 1948 in Roanoke, Virginia, to William Jennings King, Sr. (Jenks) and Daisy Ferne Simmons King. The family made their homes in Clifton Forge, Elkton, and Roanoke, Virginia.

Bill attended and graduated from Cave Spring High School in Roanoke. Next, Hampden-Sydney College, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree. At this time, Bill entered the United States Navy, serving his country as a Flight Navigator. Upon being Honorably Discharged from the Navy, Bill attended Virginia Tech University, earning a M.S. degree in Zoology. Following his years at VT, Bill entered the Medical College of Virginia, earning a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree.

As a dentist, Bill practiced in Culpeper, Virginia for over 30 years. With his health deteriorating, he moved to Winchester in 2016, to be close to family. He is survived by his brother, Robert D. King, D.D.S. (Bob), sister in law Sheryl King, nieces Annlynne and Christiana King, a number of wonderful cousins, and additional family members. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, and half-sister, Janice King Barrett.

The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to everyone at The Willows for their care of Bill, especially the nursing staff who so kindly answered his every call and holler. And, he loved to holler all of their names! The family would also like to express their enormous thanks and deepest gratitude to Blue Ridge Hospice for their assistance as Bill and his family walked this final journey together. To every healthcare professional who saw and treated Bill over these many years of his declining health, here in Winchester, Reston, Culpeper, and at UVA, the family is extremely grateful.

Bill loved car racing, especially Formula One Racing, college football and basketball. His family is certain that he’ll be watching from Heaven and rooting on the Virginia Cavaliers! He also enjoyed going to Deep Creek, spending time with his brother and getting on the boat as his health permitted. No matter where he was, Bill, always enjoyed the company of his family’s big chocolate lab, Bruce.

As his passing became imminent, Bill told everyone that they should do everything in their power to see to their health and not put it off, as he had done. Not seeing to his own health over the decades, allowed the extreme kyphosis and accompanying scoliosis to overtake him and bend and twist him unmercifully and cruelly.

Bill’s final resting place will be at the National Cemetery in Culpeper, Virginia. Services will be held on Friday, September 21, 2018, 11:00 am, at the cemetery. Jeff Kesner, Associate Pastor, Mountainview Community Church, will officiate. The family will be at the cemetery at 10:00 am to greet family and friends.
