Helen Lee Fletcher, 83 of Winchester, VA, died Thursday, June 14, 2018 at Blue Ridge Hospice In-Patient Care Center.

Helen Lee was born in 1934 in Washington, DC, the daughter of the late George and Evelyn Herl Southall. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree between the years of 1952 – 1992 from Mary Washington University. She began her executive career with the Federal Government at a young age in the Halls of Congress and continued on this path for twenty years working for the Executive Office of the White House and the EPA before retiring in 1985.

Helen Lee was a life member of the Middletown Heritage Society. She oversaw the rotation of the display of artifacts in Town Hall. Middletown is forever indebted to her for her extensive efforts to establish the Historic District in 2002. She also assisted with the establishment of the Hoffman House Museum.

She volunteered in the Stewart Bell Jr. Archives for ten years; receiving the Dola Tylor Award for Outstanding Volunteer in 2014. She published Shenandoah Apple Blossom in 1999 and donated all of the royalties to the Archives.

She is survived by her daughter, Diane Fletcher and her husband Harry Johnson of Linden, VA; a brother George A. Southall and many good friends. Helen is preceded in death by her sister Amy Bullock.

Helen Lee enjoyed traveling, historical research and good times with family and friends.
She was a lively conversationalist with a zest for life who will be missed by all who knew her.

A Celebration of Life service will be held June 27, 2018, 7:00 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home in Winchester.
