Obituary for Paul D.J. Vandenberg

Paul D.J. Vandenberg
Paul D.J. Vandenberg, 72, of Winchester V.A. passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 25th with his wife, Hwei, by his side.
Paul was born in Holland M.I. on June 3rd 1942 to his late parents Paul Benjamin and Barbara Mae Vandenberg. He also had a younger brother, Douglas James Vandenberg, who preceded him in death.
Paul was a patriot to his country, joining the U.S. Air Force in 1961 as an 18 year old and serving proudly until his retirement in 1982. Upon retirement he attended New Mexico State University, earning his Masters Degree in Computer Science. After completing his degree, Paul once again decided to serve his country by becoming a civil servant working for the federal government, where he worked until retiring again in 2011.
Paul loved computers, reading, photography, and being a member of the Mercedes Benz Club USA, where he served as Treasurer for the local chapter. He enjoyed building and racing his cars along with his son Paul Tai Vandenberg. He also was actively involved in his H.O.A., making many friends in the community he and Hwei moved to after retirement.
Paul is survived by his wife of 49 years, Hwei-Mei Vandenberg, whom he met, fell in love with, and married in Tainan, Taiwan in 1965. He is also survived by his daughter Christine Mei (Vandenberg) Bender, his son Paul Tai Vandenberg, his son-in-law Stephen Kruse, his daughter-in-law Mary Vandenberg, and his grandchildren (in order of age) Christopher, Aeslyn, Benjamin, Dylan, Isis, Alyssa, Alexander, and Kaylee. He was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather to all.
Funeral services will be held at Jones Funeral Home on May 5th at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Dr. Kirk Patrick officiating.
Memorial contributions made in my fathers’ name may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice (333 W. Cork Street, Winchester V.A.). The caregivers there were so helpful and thoughtful to my family during my father’s time there and we will be forever grateful for their kindness
