Janet Rockwell Grove, 94, of Winchester, VA passed away on Sunday, February 18, 2018 at Blue Ridge Hospice Inpatient Center.

Janet was born February 4, 1924 in Sleepy Creek, West Virginia, the daughter of Thelma Moffett and John Samuel Rockwell. Janet attended Handley High School and married Edward Harrison Grove on December 24, 1941 on the eve of World War II. She lived with Edward’s parents while he served in Europe. After the War, the couple settled in Washington, DC followed by Arlington, where they resided for 49 years before returning to their childhood home of Winchester.

Janet completed Red Cross training and was a “Gray Lady” at local hospitals during the war. She also worked at the Army Department of Engineers before traveling to a number of military bases with her husband. She was a member of Arlington Women’s Club and the Arlington Art Follies. She retired from Heritage Photography Studio of McLean when her husband retired from the Army Security Agency.

Jan and Ed enjoyed many years of friends and travel in Florida. They also spent many happy years fishing and boating at their home in Montross, VA with family and friends. In December 2016, Jan and Ed celebrated 75 years of marriage.

Jan’s devoted husband Ed passed away on July 1, 2017. She is survived by two children, Edward H. Grove III of King Copsico, Montross, VA and Vickie Scott Grove of Portola Valley, CA; five grandchildren and one great grandchild, and her sister Irene Johnston as well as many extended family members of Rockwell and Grove relatives.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 20th at 3:00 at the Jones Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ken Patrick officiating. A reception will follow. Burial in Mount Hebron cemetery will be private.
