Maxine McDonald  Kern (Kinnie)
Elizabeth Maxine McDonald Kern passed away peacefully at Amerisist Assisted Living in Stephens City, Virginia on Monday, February 13th, 2017.
Maxine was born on August 13th, 1920 in Slanesville, Hampshire County West Virginia. She was the daughter of Thomas Shaw Kinnie and Edith Mae Snyder. She had two brothers, Lloyd Kinnie and Junior Kinnie who preceded her in death.
Maxine worked for the Western Union Telegraph Co. starting in August 1948 until she retired in 1984. She was a past member of First Baptist Church where she served on many committees.
Maxine is survived by her husband Ray Whittington Kern, of Strasburg, Va.
Maxine had one son, James Franklin Johnston, who preceded her in death in March 2014. She has two grandsons, Jeffrey Scott Johnston and wife, Autumn, who reside in Olive Branch, Mississippi and Thomas Mark Johnston and wife, Kathy, who reside in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She also has five great-grandchildren, Alexa Rae, Tyler Scott, and Clara Elizabeth (Jeff/Autumn) and Andrew Thomas and Ryan Christopher (Tommy/Kathy).
The family will receive friends Thursday evening, February 16, 2017 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Jones Funeral Home in Winchester. A graveside service will be held on Friday at 11:00 a.m. at Shenandoah Memorial Park with Rev. Kristin Whitesides officiating.
