Routine

I am a friend of Kirsta, Esthers daughter. Back in 2011 or 2012, I stayed with Esther on various days while she was receiving medical treatment to assist and help her while she briefly was staying with Kirsta during that fragile time. She was very particular about certain things and definitely relayed/expressed her routine to me. Some might have found this to be tedious, but I found it endearing and comforting. Comforting to her. Routine is extremely important, especially when one has built routines and structure for over 80 years. Routine yields safety and comfort. It can be unsettling deviating from the norm and I observed this and appreciated it in her. One of my favorite authors, Henry David Thoreau once wrote: Routine is a ground to stand on, a wall to retreat to; we cannot draw on our boots without bracing ourselves against it. Esther needed her routine for safety and comfort and she wanted to be living in her home in Winchester in the later years in her life and Kirsta, like a faithful daughter, obliged and ensured her mother had what she needed to feel comfortable and safe. Esther was blessed with her children and grandchildren and blessed in her life. We will miss her.
