Obituary for Elizabeth Ashe Hollingsworth (Ashe)

Elizabeth Monfort Ashe Hollingsworth, of Warren County, VA, born Feb. 10, 1955, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2018 at the Blue Ridge Hospice In Patient Care Center.

Liz loved her home in the Shenandoah Valley overlooking the river and the Massanutten Mountains. She spent 21 years in that home with her husband and partner, Bill, creating thousands of clay sculptures that provided their livelihood. They traveled the Arts and Crafts show circuit for 20+ years where she had many friends among the other artists and her large clientele. She had many fans of her work. Her masks and sculptures bring joy to many.

Before moving to the Valley Liz had been a labor and delivery nurse for 20+ years, mainly in Arlington, Va. She received her BS in nursing from UVA and struck out for San Francisco where she cut her teeth as a caregiver and the genesis of her passion for clay was born.

Liz returned east after several years and found employment at the Arlington Hospital. She bought an antique house in the village of Buckland, Va. where her father, Thomas Joseph Ashe, Jr., had been living for several years in the old Buckland Tavern. As they restored their homes they began the fight to save this historic early American manufacturing community. Were it not for her spearheading these efforts and her commitment to that cause, progress and modernity would have surely rendered this important example of early Virginia history to the ghosts of time and fading memory.

Liz died with grace and dignity. She wasn’t afraid and left like a whisper. She fought the good fight but it’s time for her to move on. In fact, she was excited by the prospect of her new adventure.

She is survived by her loving husband, Bill, her mother, Mary Elizabeth Ashe of Warrenton, Va., her brother, Tom, and her nephew, T.J.

A memorial celebration will be held at her beloved home on Saturday afternoon, June 16, 2018 at 4:00 p.m.
