Robert Francis "Bob"  Zarger
Robert Francis Zarger, Sr., 76, of Winchester, VA, died Saturday, August 16, 2014, at Blue Ridge Hospice.
The first of three children, Mr. Zarger was born December 20, 1937, in Cumberland, MD, to the late Walter Leroy and Mary Margaret McDermott Zarger.
Robert dedicated his life to the service of others. Upon graduating from LaSalle Catholic High School in Cumberland, MD, he served his country in the U.S. Air Force. There, he met his wife, Margaret Evelyn Green. They were married on February 28, 1959, at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Riverdale, MD. After his honorable discharge from the USAF he continued to serve his country as an officer with the U.S. Park Police. While there, he attended the FBI Academy and graduated with its 103rd class. Serving as a patrolman, he received two separate awards for saving lives. He worked as a detective and in internal affairs and retired as a Major in 1989.
Upon retirement, Bob was very active in his church, Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Winchester, VA. He was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council #3572 and a Past Faithful Navigator. He served for many years as a Eucharistic Minister and Extraordinary Minister to the Homebound. He frequently served at a local soup kitchen and served on many committees in his parish.
Bob is survived by his loving wife and six children: Margaret (Christopher) Young of Waldorf, MD, Deborah Groose of Winchester, VA, Robert (Linda) Zarger, Jr., of Germantown, MD, Michael (Kristie) Zarger of Lynn Haven, FL, Dennis (Patti) Zarger of Stephens City, VA, and Christopher (Mandy) Zarger of NC, as well as 19 grandchildren.
Along with his parents, Robert was preceded in death by one sister, Margaret Mary Zarger and one brother, James Claude Zarger.
Mr. Zarger’s family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 19, 2014, from 7-9 pm at Jones Funeral Home, Winchester VA. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will begin at 7:15.
A funeral mass for Mr. Zarger will be held Wednesday, August 20, 2014, at 10:00 am at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 130 Keating Dr. Winchester, VA with Rev. Stanley J. Krempa officiating.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Adult Care Center of Northern Shenandoah Valley, 411 North Cameron St. Winchester, VA 22601, or Blue Ridge Hospice 333 West Cork Street, Winchester, VA 22601, or the Wounded Warrior Project.
