Obituary for Roger William Vaughan

Roger William Vaughan
One of Winchester's longtime residents, Roger Vaughan, went home to be with the Lord Jesus on September 23, 2013.
Roger William Vaughan was born in Dolphin, Virginia on November 21, 1932 to William L. and Ione (Roberts) Vaughan. Through his mother, he was a direct descendent of King Robert I of Scotland, commonly known as Robert the Bruce. Mr. Vaughan, whose father had passed away when he was a year old, went to work when he was twelve years old at Daniel's Store, working the soda fountain. He graduated from Lawrenceville High School, in Lawrenceville, Virginia in 1950. He then studied at the Richmond Professional Institute. Mr. Vaughan went on to serve his country during the Korean War from 1953-55. After serving in the Army, he attended the University of Richmond and graduated with a bachelor's degree in history.
Mr. Vaughan went to work for Beneficial Finance and then became a school teacher at Manchester High School for three years. At this time he met Suzanne Smith, a fellow teacher, and they married in 1961. Mr. Vaughan worked for the Exxon Corporation before settling in Winchester to work for his father-in-law, Sebert Smith, at the Winchester Casket Company. Later, he jointly purchased the Winchester Casket Company with Smith Dorsey and Louis Dorsey and they continued its successful operation until 1992, when he retired and the company was sold. Mr. Vaughan was also active in the Lions Club for many years and in his retirement worked at the Winchester Food Bank.
Mr. Vaughan enjoyed fishing and gardening, but his joie de vivre was the game of golf. His passion for golf progressed from its beginnings of hitting his first golf ball through Governor Albertis Harrison Jr.’s window in Lawrenceville, VA. Then he met Billy Phillips in Texas (later the golf pro at Winchester Country Club) while stationed at Ft. Sam Houston, where Billy was the golf pro. He then went on to play and win numerous tournaments and matches through the years on courses from Alaska to Florida, and peaking at a 4 handicap. He was a member of the Winchester Country Club for more than 40 years.
Mr. Vaughan is survived by his wife Suzanne, daughter and son-in-law, Suzette and Paul Huber of Nikiski, Alaska, and 4 grandchildren: Camille, Warren, Gordon, and Caroline. He is preceded in death by his son, Sebie, father and mother, William and Ione, and 7 siblings: George, Lorene (McCutcheon), Randolph, Martha, Raymond, Ralph, and Murle Vaughan.
A memorial service will be held at the Jones Funeral Home, 228 S. Pleasant Valley Road, Winchester, VA on October 1, 2013 at 1:00 p.m with Pastor Mark Carey officiating. Interment will follow in Mount Hebron Cemetery. Afterwards, there will be a food and fellowship time with family and friends at the Fellowship Bible Church, 2930 Middle Road, Winchester, VA.
Pallbearers will be Gary Huber, Paul Huber, Warren Huber, Gordon Huber, Steven Wilson and Aaron Wilson. Honorary pallbearers will be Woody Baker, Smith Dorsey and Louis Dorsey.
The family will receive friends beginning at 11:30 prior to the service at the funeral home.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be sent to The Mission Fund at Fellowship Bible Church.
